History of Holmes County   Holmes County was named after Major Andrew Hunter Holmes of the United States Army who was killed in the War of 1812.  The population is 38,943 and about 18,000 of that are Amish decent.  Millersburg is the county seat, where you will find Pomerene Hospital, a local swimming pool, government offices, the main post office, banks, grocery stores, shops, a library, and a variety of other offices.   The county consists of two separate school districts:  West Holmes and East Holmes.  West Holmes School District has approximately 2,700 students enrolled for education.  The school district comprises of one high school (grades 9-12), one middle school (grades 6-8), and five elementary schools.  East Holmes School District has approximately 1,900 students enrolled for education.  The school district comprises of one high/middle school (grades 7-12) and nine elementary schools.  For children and adults in the county with special learning needs, there is also the Holmes County Training Center, near Holmesville.  Both school districts have strong community backing and support for the improvement of programs and buildings.   There are three Commissioners elected to four-year terms.  The Commissioners take a broad view of actions necessary to make the county a better place to live and work.  There are 14 townships with at least three trustees and one clerk who oversees the repair and upkeep of the township roads.  You will find a variety of churches, clubs, and organizations.  For the youth of the county, you will find Boy Scouts, and 4-H clubs.  We have three local newspapers (Holmes County Hub, The Bargain Hunter, and the Holmes County Journal) and a local radio station (WKLM, 95.3 FM).   Living in a rural community like Holmes County, you will find neighbors and friends willing to lend a helping hand.
